Training

The Task Force has developed a multifaceted approach to training in order to maximize its effectiveness.  Investigators assigned to the Task Force arrive with varied levels of experience, knowledge, and training.  An individual training plan is designed which addresses both the desires of the investigator as well as the needs of the Task Force.  For example, if an individual wants to become a computer forensic examiner, their training program may include an extensive number of classes enabling them to reach that goal.

Personnel may be assigned to attend investigative courses which have no particular emphasis on high technology-related crime.  This is because some investigators have not yet had the necessary training while assigned at their home agencies.  By sending personnel to such classes as the ICI Core Investigations Course, Criminal Surveillance, and Burglary Investigation, the Task Force develops a well-rounded individual who is able to make a more significant contribution to the unit.

Considerable in-house training is also done.  This may consist of a short presentation during the weekly Task Force meeting by a staff member who has recently become aware of, or received training on, a specific topic of interest.  An outside guest "expert" may conduct a formal training workshop, two to four hours in length.  This process ensures that personnel will be knowledgeable about current trends and developments in technology.

The Task Force provides training to investigators and patrol officers from many agencies in order to increase their awareness about high technology crimes, and provide the necessary information to enable them to be effective "first responders" and "case agents."  This training includes such topics as identification, seizure, and preservation of computer evidence, and high technology-related search warrants.

The Task Force also provides training to the public through a variety of community outreach events.  The goal here is to educate the citizens about recognizing high technology crimes and also to provide information to prevent them from becoming victims.
