Listed below are highlights from some of the Community Outreach Education
Events that took place during 2001.
Sacramento
Sheriff's detectives coordinated and ran the joint Techno-Fraud 2001 Conference
put on by the North West Fraud Investigators Association, the Nevada Financial
Crimes Investigators Association, and the California Financial Crimes
Investigators Association. The conference was held from May 30, 2001 to
June 1, 2001 in South Lake Tahoe.
The Hi-Tech Crimes Division/Identity Theft unit was represented at the KCRA Call
3 and C.A.U.S.E. Foundation "Schemes, Scams and Rip-Offs" public
education event. Members of the greater Sacramento community were invited
to speak to a variety of different agencies at this event. The Identity
Theft unit was invited to provide information specific to identity theft issues
and prevention.
A
presentation on Identity Theft was given to a group of SMUD employees during
their safety meeting. The purpose of the presentation was to improve
awareness of identity theft for the employees personally, as well as
professionally.
The
Task Force presented a block of Identity Theft/Financial Crimes training at the
Volunteers in Partnership with the Sheriff (VIPS) academy. This training
was to assist the volunteers in understanding identity theft so they can better
serve the community.
A presentation on identity theft was given to the local Credit Union
Association. Much like the above SMUD presentation, this was to improve
awareness of identity theft issues both personally and professionally.
The Task Force gave a one-hour presentation on fraud prevention to the Rancho
Cordova Hotel/Motel managers association. There were ten participants.
A two-hour instructional presentation on identity theft and related fraud was
given to the sheriff's East Station volunteers. There were 40
participants.
The
Task Force gave a two-hour presentation on identity theft and related crimes to
the Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Academic Honor Society at
California State University, Sacramento. For more information
